 is the brand name of the drug sitagliptin, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes.

• Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn't make or use the hormone insulin normally, so it can't properly control your blood sugar levels.
  
• Januvia belongs to a class of drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by increasing levels of substances in the body that help lower blood sugar.
  
• Januvia may be taken alone or with other diabetes medications. It's often prescribed as a combination medicine called Janumet (which contains the drugs sitagliptin and metformin).
• Taking Januvia, along with adopting a healthy lifestyle, can reduce your risk of developing serious or life-threatening complications from diabetes, which may include heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney problems, or eye problems.
• The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Januvia in 2006. It's manufactured by Merck & Co.

Januvia Warnings

Januvia shouldn't be taken by people with type 1 diabetes (a disease in which the body doesn't produce any insulin) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous condition that can occur if high blood sugar is untreated).

Before taking Januvia, tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had:

• High cholesterol or high triglyceride levels
  
• Gallbladder stones
  
• Kidney disease
  
• Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, arms, or legs)
  
• Januvia may increase the risk of developing pancreatitis (swelling and inflammation of the pancreas).

Be sure to tell your doctor if you've ever had any problems with your pancreas, or if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking Januvia:

• Severe pain in your upper stomach that spreads to your back
  
• Loss of appetite
  
• Fast heartbeat
  
• Severe nausea and vomiting
  

Also, tell your doctor you're taking this medicine before having any type of surgery, including a dental procedure.

Januvia isn't approved for anyone under age 18.

Let your doctor know if you drink alcohol, or have ever consumed large amounts of alcohol, before using this medicine.

Januvia may also cause a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Tell your doctor right away if you experience the following symptoms:

• Fever or chills
  
• Sore throat
  
• Swelling in your face, hands, mouth, tongue, or throat
  
• Burning in your eyes
  
• Skin pain
  
• Rash (especially a red or purplish rash)
  
• Itching
  
• Peeling
  
• Blistering
  
• Loose skin
  
• Trouble breathing or swallowing
  
• Illnesses, injuries, or unusual stress can affect your blood sugar levels. They may also influence how much Januvia you need. Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these conditions.
• Changes in blood sugar may occur during your treatment with Januvia. You should know the symptoms of a high or low blood sugar episode, and what to do if you experience them.

Signs of low blood sugar may include:

• Dizziness
  
• Headache
  
• Hunger
  
• Sweating
  
• Pale skin
  
• Feeling shaky
  
• Trouble concentrating
  
• Irritability

Symptoms of high blood sugar may include:

• Increased thirst

Your doctor will probably want to check your blood sugar and urine sugar levels often while you're on Januvia. Keep all appointments with your doctor and laboratory.

Pregnancy and Januvia

Januvia isn't believed to harm a fetus. Still, tell your doctor if you're pregnant, or plan to become pregnant while taking this medicine.

It's not known whether this drug passes into breast milk or could hurt a breastfeeding baby. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding while using Januvia.

Serious Side Effects of Januvia

Januvia Interactions

Tell your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary drugs you're taking, especially:

• Lanoxicaps or Lanoxin (digoxin)
  
• Insulin
  
• Certain oral medications for diabetes, including Diabinese (chlorpropamide), Amaryl (glimepiride), Glucotrol (glipizide), DiaBeta (glyburide), Tolinase (tolazamide), and tolbutamide

Januvia and Alcohol

Alcohol can affect your blood sugar levels. Don't drink alcohol while taking Januvia without first discussing it with your doctor.

Januvia and Other Interactions

Januvia may cause dizziness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other activities that require alertness.

Januvia Dosage

• Januvia comes as a tablet to take by mouth. Each tablet contains 25 milligrams (mg), 50 mg, or 100 mg.
  
• Your dose will depend on your medical condition and other factors.
  
• Januvia is typically taken once a day, with or without food.
  
• Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully when using this medicine. Don't take more or less Januvia than is recommended.
  
• This medicine helps control high blood sugar, but it won't cure diabetes. Continue to take Januvia even if you feel well.
  
• Don't stop using this medicine without first talking to your doctor.

Januvia Overdose

Signs of a Januvia overdose may include:

If you suspect an overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose of Januvia

If you miss a dose of Januvia, take it as soon as you remember.

But if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular medication schedule.

Don't double up on doses to make up for a missed one.
